Mesotrophic lakes are commonly found in central Minnesota and have clear water with occasional algal blooms in late summer. Ab years ago, another lobe of ice advanced from the northwest and overrode the northern part of the Mille Lacs moraine, sending its meltwater into Lake Mille Lacs.

Once this influx of meltwater ended, precipitation and small streams maintained the water level in Lake Mille Lacs. The Mille Lacs Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a local government unit that provides education, technical and financial assistance. The Mille Lacs SWCD was established in and is governed by five locally elected supervisors who hold monthly public meetings and provide ongoing supervision of district staff.
